KONE Corporation, press release, January 3, 2014
KONE, a leader in the lift and escalator industry, has won an order to fully replace fifteen lifts and modernise a further four lifts at six busy London Underground stations. This order comes as part of the Tube improvement plan.
The customised KONE MiniSpace(TM) lifts equipped with KONE EcoDisc® hoisting machines will carry up to 50 persons at a time from the street level to the station platform. For example at Bank station, KONE's new lifts will carry over 4,000 people per hour, meeting the demands of smooth People Flow at peak times. All the lifts will be fitted with the KONE E-Link(TM) remote monitoring system to ensure high availability of the equipment.
"We have a long-standing relationship with the London Underground, and we are pleased to continue to improve the commuter experience in the Tube. Modernising these lifts will increase their reliability and minimise disruption to commuters in one of the world's busiest metro systems," says Michael Williams, Managing Director for KONE Great Britain.
The first lift upgrade will begin at the Gloucester Road station in 2014, with the final lifts to be installed at Lambeth North in 2017. The contract will also include the preventive maintenance of the equipment until 2034, and modernisation packages when the need for upgrades arise. KONE's dedicated team currently maintains 150 lifts and 45 elevators, which accounts for a third of the London Underground's equipment base.
The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2013.
